Hong Kong was a city of protest before it turned to the city of fear. Covid restrictions have sudden happed in way that produced unpleasant results with Beijing’s efforts to mash the protests and made the city a quiet’s city. China’s government is taking down those who fight against, from billionaire tycoons to single students’ one after the other.
As conflict is mash, activists of Hong Kong were faced by very difficult choice to stay or run away from prison or displace. Birtles bring the Hong Kong rebellion, as Beijing exert an iron grip on the once liberal outpost, snuffing out the last breath of democracy.
He tell the story of Max, a young Hong Kong activist, who must decide if he should stay and fight for democracy, risking jail, or flee and continue to campaign from outside. “the atmosphere is different. It’s a lot grimmer and it’s become a lot harder to hold on hope,” says Max.
According to a reporter Bill Birtless “people that are used to ring during the protests, they won’t even pick up the phone and speak to him anymore, the fear there is real and it is widespread. There is a new national security law and many people there think that talking to someone like him could now put them at risk of being arrested and jailed.” Many people who were interviewed are now in prison. With the relation of some crew, there are some result about the crushing of a rebellion, the Coronavirus and crackdown may have cleared the street of demonstrators but there’s still a crowd at the courts for the arrival of the protest leaders.
One of the activist Joshua Wong he said “we have than 10,000 Hong Kongers who were arrested, 2,000 people were prosecuted, 100 of activists were already physically locked up in prison, he continue their courage and determination impressed me and inspired me, there is no reason for us to step backward. Joshua wong and his two closet political aliens are fronting up for their big day in court.
He’s led pro-democracy protest since he was a teenager, he also said he has been arrested for ten times, faced six court case, been jailed for three times as a political activist his role is to continue to fight and let the voice of Hong Kongers heard around the world.”
5 days after the interview, Joshua wong leaves court in prison van with a 13-month sentence. Important and well know voices are now generally quiet, he was told by the supporters that he’s not alone. His crime came out before June 2020 of a feared new national security law, under which anybody can be charged with terrorism, subversion, secession, or foreign collusion and the penalty up to life in prison.
